Tauberer and DC Council: Implementing UELMA for DC, and prototype of XML for the DC Code

The District of Columbia Council has launched The Cranch Project , “the Council’s effort to create the nation’s first UELMA-compliant, open-source, state-level Code of Laws.”

UELMA is the Uniform Electronic Legal Material Act.

Dr. Joshua Tauberer of GovTrack is working on this project, and says that project is being conducted in “the Office of the General Counsel in the Council of the District of Columbia.”

As part of the project, Josh has posted a prototype of the DC Code in XML.

According to the Cranch Project’s GitHub repository readme, the steps of the project are:

First, the Code needs to be made available in a machine-readable format. For a prototype, see https://github.com/JoshData/dc-code-prototype. Then, we need to make sure that the Code meets UELMA’s requirements. Finally, we need to develop a methodology for updating the Code.
